Nasum-Liton heroics give Bangladesh awaited victory

CRICDOT DESK : After losing eight matches in a row in the short format of T20, Bangladesh finally saw the face of victory. The Tigers lost by 61 runs in the first T20 of the two-match series against the Afghans.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first in the first Twenty20 of the two-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Thursday.

Chasing the target, Nasum Ahmed’s off-spin got confused and Afghanistan lost the wickets of the top-order 4 batsmen for 20 runs.

Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Nabi put on 36 runs for the fifth wicket. Shakib Al Hasan returned these two sets of batsmen to the dressing room. Mostafiz took one wicket and with 3 wickets, young pacer Shariful Islam defeated the Afghans by 94 runs in 16.4 overs.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first in the first Twenty20 of the two-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Thursday.

The Tigers got into trouble after batting first. Bangladesh lost two openers Munim Shahriar and Naeem Sheikh for just 25 runs in 5 overs.

Shakib Al Hasan was out before the batting was set. Shakib returned with only 5 runs from 8 balls. Mahmudullah Riyadh is in the same situation as Shakib. He returned for 10 off 8 balls.

After Munim, Naeem, Shakib and Mahmudullah were dismissed for 60 runs in 10.5 overs, Liton Das took the helm of the team along with Afif Hossain. Liton-Afif added 46 runs off 36 balls for the fifth wicket.

After that Bangladesh lost 4 wickets in just 16 balls and scored 155/6.

In the 47th match of his T20 career, Liton Das returned with a maximum of 60 runs off 44 balls with four boundaries and two sixes. Afif returned with 25 off 24 balls with just one ball to spare.

Yasir Ali was dismissed for 7 runs after playing his debut match in T20. Like him, Mehdi Hasan also returned after being run out.

The Afghan cricket team was distracted by Nasum Ahmed’s off-spin after chasing a target of 156 runs.

Nasum took the wicket in the first over of the innings. Rahmanullah Gurbaj took the wicket by spending only 1 run in the first over.

He came in bowling in the third over and took two wickets without any run in just 3 balls. Hazratullah Jazai and Darwish Rasul returned to the toilet after being his victim. He took two wickets for 1 run in that over.

In the fifth over of the innings, Nasum Ahmed bowled Karim Janat in the third over. Nasum Ahmed sent 4 Afghan top-order batsmen to the dressing room after spending only 6 runs in 3 overs.

In the fourth over, pace bowler Mostafizur Rahman, however, created an opportunity to catch the wicket. But wicketkeeper Liton Das could not catch the catch. Najibullah Zadran got life by putting the ball in his gloves.

After Nasum, Shakib Al Hasan hit the Afghan camp twice. In the 11th over, Mohammad Nabi hit a boundary off Shakib’s fifth ball and was caught by Afif Hossain in the deep cover.

Before returning to the dressing room as the fifth batsman for the team’s 57 runs, he made a partnership of 36 runs with Najibullah. Nabi returned with 16 runs. After that, Shakib turned Najibullah, who was playing with open arms, into the catch of Munim Shahriar. Najibullah made 26 off 26 balls before returning to the team’s 6 runs.

Young pacer Shariful Islam did not allow all-rounder Rashid Khan to be set on the wicket. Rashid Khan got a chance to score only 1 run before giving the catch to Yasir Ali.

Mostafizur Rahman dismissed Azmatullah who scored 20 runs from 18 balls. After Kayes Ahmed, young pacer Shariful Islam bowled out Mujib Ur Rahman for 94 in 16.4 overs.
