CRICDOT DESK : Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) has appointed legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene as its national team advisory coach.

The former national team captain was appointed by Sri Lanka on a one-year contract. Its activities will start from January 1, 2022.

Confirming the matter, the SLC said in a press release that Jayawardene will serve for one year. He will be in charge of the overall cricketing component of the national team. During this time he will provide strategic support to players and management teams.

“We are delighted that Mahela is joining the national team for an extended role,” said Ashley de Silva, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board. Sri Lanka has a lot of international matches in this one year, especially the T20 World Cup. We believe he will be invaluable to our team’s overall performance.

Although Mahela Jayawardene has been appointed for the national team, Sri Lanka will continue to work with the under-19 team. Under his coaching, the Sri Lankan youth team will take part in the Under-19 World Cup to be held in the West Indies next year.

With a one-year contract with the national team, Mahela Jayawardene said that Sri Lanka has a lot of potential talented cricketers. This is a great opportunity to work with the coaches of our various development teams, including the Under-19 team.

“I am very passionate about Sri Lankan cricket and believe that with a concerted and focused team effort, we can achieve consistent success in the future with an holistic approach to working in all age groups,” he added.

“My main role will be to support our team of national coaches and support staff in terms of our preparation and strategic thinking for the coming year,” Mahela added.
