Can Bangladesh overcome Afghanistan?

CRICDOT DESK : Afghanistan did not meet the expectations of whitewash in the ODI series in Chittagong. Bangladesh would have risen to number six in the ICC ODI rankings if they had won the third and final ODI. But due to batting failure, Tamim Iqbal’s team lost to the Afghans by 8 wickets in Sagarika last Monday.

The hosts are stepping into the T20 series with the imperfections of ODIs. The small format series will start tomorrow (Thursday, March 3) at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. Bangladesh and Afghanistan arrived in Dhaka from the port city of Chittagong on Tuesday afternoon to play a two-match series. The two teams will practice at Mirpur Stadium today.

Like in ODIs, Bangladesh team has a chance to improve in the rankings in T20 series as well. This time the opponent has seized the opportunity to overtake the Afghans. Mahmudullah Riyadh’s team will have to win the series to get a taste of such improvement. However, if the series is won, the Afghans will also improve in the rankings.

Now Bangladesh is the ninth team in T20 ranking, rating point 231. Afghans ranked eighth with 232 rating points. If they win the series 2-0 in Mirpur, Bangladesh will move up to eighth place. Then the rating point will be 233.

If they lose the series, the Afghans will drop to tenth place with 228 ratings. And if the series is drawn 1-1, then the position of the two teams will not change. However, if Bangladesh loses the series 2-0, it will move to tenth place with 228 ratings. Then Afghanistan will rise to the seventh place with 236 rating. Two T20s will be held on March 3 and 5 at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur.

However, Bangladesh’s experience against Afghans in this format is not pleasant. The Tigers have won two of their last three home matches, losing once. The latest meeting between the two parties is for a more horrible Bangladesh. The Afghans defeated Shakib-led Bangladesh 3-0 in Dehradun, India. Despite losing two consecutive ODIs, the visiting team has returned to the confidence of winning the last match. Rashid-Mujibra will definitely take the biggest test of Bangladesh in T20 series in Mirpur.
